Keeping at pace with New Media

ZAMBOANGA CITY ? To keep apace with the latest trends in media and to maximize dissemination of government information using the ?new media,? otherwise known as ?social media,? the staff of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Region 9 recently went through a training on such new trends in Cebu City.

Allan Ed Capulong, consultant with the Presidential New Media, a unit of the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO), gave a lecture during the training.

He said: ?The new media is an inevitable trend, a reality that is fast-growing and widely used. PIA, therefore, being the information arm of government should be up and upbeat with it, or else you wake up someday and find out you are already obsolete or left behind.?

Capulong said new media open the opportunity to people to connect directly with the President of the country, open an avenue for introverts to express themselves and are even considered a venue for political revolution or a game changer itself.

Understanding the New Media

New media, according to research, ?emerged in the latter part of the 20th century. It refers to on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation and community formation around the media content.?

New media content are generated in real time, of which content is new and unregulated.

Capulong said, ?Most technologies described as new media are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated, networkable, dense, compressible and interactive.?

Examples of new media are the Internet, websites, blogs, computer multimedia, video games, CD-ROMS and DVDs. Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia, is an example. Facebook is another example of the social media model, in which most users are also participants. YouTube is another example of new media.

?It?s not media (press people) ang puro naglalagay ng laman, It?s the power of people to send content,? Allan explained in his lecture.

New media do not include television programs, feature films, magazines, books, or paper-based publications ? unless they contain technologies that enable digital interactivity.

The Filipino Internet Users

The guest lecturer said if PIA wants to be more effective in maximizing information dissemination in today?s era, the agency should be visible in the world of new media.

?You should be on Facebook, Tweeter, blogs, YouTube or any social media where you could spread government information, programs and projects to the netizens,? Capulong said.

He said of the 101 million Filipinos, 33.6 million are online, 28 million are on Facebook and 10 million are on Tweeter.

?Industry estimate is that by next year, there will be 50 million, or half of the population, on line,? he said.

?We also have to accept that the youth of today are now into Internet, and if you want to influence these youth through your sharing of quality information, then you should be in circulation,? he added.

Capulong said 85 percent of the young generation aged 18-20 years old and 74 percent aged 21-24 years old have access to the Internet.

?Statistics show that 71 percent of income classes ABC are into the Internet, while 51 percent of income class D are into the Internet,? he added.

Access to Internet has increased from 2 percent penetration 10 years ago. It improved to 9 percent in 2009 and a whopping 33 percent in 2012. To date there are 33.6 percent of Filipinos who are Internet users, Capulong said.

?According to International Data Corp. (IDC), 86 percent are part of a social network,? Capulong revealed.

?The market you are serving already has the power to choose,? Allan said, adding that information are not just downloaded or handed to them by the media alone, but the market or netizens too have the power to give information, give content, feedback, interact or participate.

?In new media, everybody is a writer, a reporter,? he said.

The Internet has taken over radio and newspaper in getting news in the Philippine setting, Capulong said.

He showed statistics where Filipinos get their news: 89 percent from television, 45 percent from the Internet, 36 percent from radio, 12 from newspapers and 4 percent from magazines.

?People have less time to read. They go for short news and infographics,? he said.

Information graphics, or infographics, according to Wikipedia, are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge. These graphics present complex information quickly and clearly, such as in signs, maps, journalism, technical writing and education.

?Tweeter is very successful because tweets are limited to 140 characters, putting in only more relevant information,? he said.

New Media for Government

Capulong said new media gives government workers the opportunity to track and analyze what people are saying and hear their sentiments about the government, ?and with these, we can plan our data and engage into proper actions.?

?Online is the new hotline, new frontline and new lifeline. It is, therefore, a must that you should be in it,? Capulong told the training participants.

?New media for government is about real time and speed and about the other angle. It?s about President Noy talking to his people, showing that he is on the move. It?s about the other thing, building excitement, is about recognizing faceless heroes, is about PNoy appreciating volunteers, is about people seeing PNoy?s point of view, is about seeing PNoy?s impact, is about showing who is more important in this government, is about real emotions and best practices,? Capulong said..

He also disclosed the best time to post online news or press releases. ?Specific to Filipinos, based on a six-month trending, it is best that we post our news stories at 9 to 10:30 in the morning and 11 to 12:30 noon and 5 to 6:30 in the evening during weekdays,? he said.

Space shuttle Endeavour flyovers generate social media buzz

Space shuttle Endeavour is generating excitement Thursday as it flies from Texas to Edwards Air Force Base in California’s Mojave Desert.

People took to Twitter, Facebook and other social media (see below) as the shuttle departed Houston and made a flyover of Austin, posting their photos of the retired orbiter as it passed near local landmarks.

The shuttle left Houston shortly after 5 a.m. PDT on
Thursday en route for Edwards Air Force Base, where it is expected to touch down around 12:30 p.m. after a
30-minute flyover around the base.

Space shuttle Endeavour’s final flight from Kennedy Space Center in Florida to its permanent home in Los Angeles is a historic farewell tour. Perched on the back of a modified Boeing 747, the shuttle is flying 1,500 feet over several cities along the route, including Houston, Austin and Tucson.

To welcome the space shuttle to Southern California, NASA has invited
40 of its social media followers, including space enthusiasts, to the
Dryden Flight Research Center on the Edwards base. The participants were randomly selected from online
registrations that took place in August, according to information

The group, restricted to U.S. citizens 18 and over who follow NASA on
Twitter, Facebook and Google+,  will have a rare opportunity to see the
landing and departure of Endeavour, officials said. They will also be
given the opportunity to speak with experts, tour shuttle support

Ikon has made two hires to strengthen the STW Group media agency’s creative and social media credentials.

Ian Laurie joins from TBG Digital in the UK as social performance manager. He will work alongside the agency’s search, strategy and data divisions.

Ikon has also hired an art director, Jacalin Ding, who will sit in the social media team. According to a press release from the agency, Ding will “shape the creative direction of the work that Ikon produces for its clients.”

Both will report into Nick Tubb, head of social media, mobile and technology.

Tubb said: “our mission is to drive our business forwards in both creative and technical capabilities simultaneously. The appointment of Ian and Jacalin delivers on bringing some really exciting and diverse skill sets into the agency which clients have responded to positively.”
